Happy Halloween!
Mr. Scott Hack worked with students to present "Staged Readings"
of the work of Edgar Allen Poe, master of horror! Presentations
were made to the entire 8th grade at Bay Middle School.

"The Raven" read by Tessa Wunder, Charlotte Majercik, Wren Powell and Jen Kasunick (with assistant Ryan Stein).

‚Äč"Annabelle Lee" read by Aiden Stojic. AidenStojic
"The Cask of Amontillado" read by Mrs. Rademaker, Mr. Hack and Aiden Stojic.
"The Toaster" depicted the mysterious ceremony at Poe's gravesite by an unknown, shadowy visitor each year at least since 1949 in Baltimore, MD.

First Annual Pumkin' Chunkin'!
The 1st Annual Punkin' Chunkin' event was held today at Bay Middle School with the entire sixth-grade class competing for distance in getting their pumpkins to sail across the Cahoon Park soccer field. Featured were contraptions that the students have been working on for four-to-five weeks: trebuchets, sling shots and catapults. There was also a human pumpkin toss competition. The pumkins weighed two-to-three pounds, and some of the contraptions looked to be 10 feet high.
About 30 total groups of students made up teams who competed for bragging rights. Sixth-grade Town Council provided refreshments to about 100 spectators with a bake sale to benefit their club. Sixth-grade science teacher Brent Illenberger announced the various events and distances, sixth-grade math teacher Laurance Kuh kept the contraptions timed and lined up, and the entire team of sixth-grade teachers contributed to the math, physics, history and science student knowledge behind the primitive pumpkin-shooting tools.

Augmented Reality Sandbox at Bay Middle School
Imagine being able to see and create varying altitudes in sand, then making it rain to see where the water goes based on the topography! Great hands-on learning created by Bay Middle School science teachers Anne Budzik and Camille Sheehan. Kids are having such fun learning with their Augmented Reality Sandbox!

Community Meeting on School Safety
The community of Bay Village have high expectations for our schools, and residents expect to be kept as well-informed as possible. School safety has, of course, been a "top of the mind" issue for all school communities, and on Thursday, October 18, we presented 11 front-line experts from our city and schools to discuss our efforts to improve the safety and security for our students and staff. About 60 audience members attended, but if you could not make it to the meeting, we present the videos for your information.

Survivor Math Challenge at Westerly!
Westerly held an all-day Survivor Math Challenge on Thursday, October 11. Tribes (classes) engaged in math challenges throughout the day no matter the class. Students wore bandanas to tie into the "Survivor" theme, Survivor music was played as tribes moved from one challenge to the next, and students also learned about different countries as they carried maps to guide them during their day of exploration.
