New freshwater Bay Village Well in eSwatini, Africa
Bay High Key Club sponsored a freshwater well in the small African country of eSwatini with $12,000 raised in the spring of 2019. The Thirst Project was a major success, and now there will be a Bay Village Well providing clean water to 70 homesteads and 700 people, freeing up hours and days for education and work, and greatly reducing the potential for disease. You can see the location of the well on Google Maps, and you can read more about it at:
Pictured above is Key Club advisor Anita Bauknecht (center) with student leaders Noah Lowery and Shea Janos. The three were invited to attended the Thirst Project Legacy Summit this past July at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Not only was the project honored, but Mrs. Bauknecht was honored with one of the two “Educator of the Year” awards. Bay High Key Club has raised a total of $28,000 for the Thirst Project in the past three years.

Bay High's Kelly McCrone at Kent State
Bay High Social Studies teacher Kelly McCrone spent time this summer at the May 4, 1970 Then & Now: Voices for Change Educators Summit. The Summit explored the history and legacy of the May 4, 1970 Kent State University anti-Vietnam War protests. The resulting confrontation between protesters and the Ohio National Guard resulted in the shooting deaths of four students. Nine were also injured. This video features interviews with Summit participants, and Kelly shares thoughts about her experience (link is queued to Kelly's feature at 1:32).

Building community partnerships for student social/emotional/mental health
Superintendent Jodie Hausmann welcomed faith and city leaders from Bay Village on August 27 to partner with our school district's efforts in supporting student social, emotional and mental health needs and development. Speakers giving updates about our "We Care" umbrella of services included Asst. Supt. Special Services Marty Patton and Bay resident and social worker Mary Wise on Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports; Bay Middle School Principal Aaron Ereditario on our Threat Assessment protocol; school counselor Megan Basel on Youth Mental Health First Aid training for staff and adults in the community; Bay Village Police Chief Mark Spaetzel on police partnership with our schools; Bay Family Services social worker Jamie Mahnic on how we address absenteeism; Case Western Reserve University's Jean Frank on our Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) statistics and trends; and former Bay High Principal Jim Cahoon on the Preventure program at Bay Middle School for targeted intervention of risk tendencies.

Yes, you can go home again!
Channel 3's Dave Chudowsky (Bay High Class of 1993) came "back to school" for an early morning broadcast from Bay High stadium. Our Rockettes, Cheerleaders, and Varsity Football players were there bright and early to add to the excitement. Dave's Bay High football coach, Tom Kaiser, reminisced about Dave's Rocket days on the football and baseball team, and today's players presented a Rockets jersey with Dave's number 82 and had a high school news interview to play -- obvious why he went into broadcasting! The video interview with Coach Kaiser is below, and here we got some kudos about so much of what makes Bay Village Schools such a great place.
