Supt. Hausmann Parent update June 2019

UpdateNotebookPens

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As we wrap up this school year, my first in Bay Village, I want to thank all our parents, students and staff members for the warm welcome I have received. Your spirit of kindness and support have made this a successful year, and I am grateful to have landed in such a wonderful community!

From the summer coffees so many of you hosted last summer, to our wonderful students performances and athletic events, and to my meetings with students, staff and senior citizens at various times throughout the year, the dedication I see to nurturing our children is constant. As I told our teachers and staff, I have seen "pockets of brilliance" in other districts, but never where it exists in every classroom, every school, and every department like in Bay. It also exists in every age group and organization in our town.

Following are some items that will help you plan a positive summer experience for your students. There is so much to do in our area, and getting away from screens is much easier when the weather is nice!

Suggestion – a Family Media Plan

Here is a great resource, recommended by our Normandy Elementary School Counselor Megan Basel, that will help families with every age group of children, K-12. Plan as a family how to make the most of the positive aspects of the internet and social media/texts, but also how to limit and mitigate the downside.

What to do instead of screen activities?

Our Director of Curriculum, Char Shryock, has designed an outstanding, hands-on, interactive resource for parents to use with young children as they visit local Bay Village locations. Word Play Around Bay and Number Play Around Bay. CLICK HERE to access the Mobile Version - formatted for Personal Electronic Devices and Smartphones OR scan the QR code below with a QR scan app on your mobile device.

CLICK HERE to access a PDF version you can download and print at home. The PDF is designed to be folded into a pocket sized brochure. You can also find copies of the printed brochure at the Bay Village Board of Education office (377 Dover Center), at the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, and at Glenview Child Care and Learning Center.

Great hands-on fun and learning!

Our Bay Village Library – Open All Summer

Don't forget about the wonderful learning resource we have in the Bay Village Public Library and all our county libraries! In addition to bringing homes piles of books to read, there are many other learning resources (toys, puzzles and more) available for every age group. Check out their program of story times and summer camps available.

What a gem -- our Lake Erie Nature and Science Center

There are so many great educational offerings at the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center! In addition to all the animal exhibits (which you can view for FREE), there are programs for every age group of students and for families. If you don't know, the planetarium is amazing! Plan to spend some time at this great resource available right here in Bay!

Artists find inspiration and skills at Bayarts!

What better time to explore our creative, artistic side that summer? We have so many talented, award-winning student artists in Bay, and Bayarts is certainly one of the most valuable resources around to nurture that talent! Check out their classes.

Best in the West!
Finally, help me celebrate our new ranking in Cleveland Magazine's Rating the Suburbs 2019 issue! Bay Village as a community came in SECOND out of more than 75 Northeast Ohio suburbs. An important part of that community rating is its public school district, and Bay Village Schools were ranked the Best in the West this year, coming in SIXTH overall, and FIRST in districts on the west side of Cleveland. This is an important resource for families when they shop for homes and school districts in our area, and we a happy to cooperate with Cleveland Magazine each year as they complete their survey with information provided both by us and by the Ohio Department of Education.

I also want to note that the Bay Village Board of Education is considering a calendar modification, so the district can conduct a safety and security training day (without students in attendance) on Friday, August 30th (Labor Day weekend). I will notify you as soon as the decision is made at our Monday, June 27 Board of Education meeting.

Enjoy your summer at the beach, the pool and the backyards of Bay Village. Learning doesn't stop during our Bay Village summers . . . it just takes place in so many, different ways!

Best,
Mrs. Hausmann
