Dear Parents/Guardians —
In our continuous efforts to kick off the 2020-2021 school year in a measured, safe approach while supporting our One Rocket Nation families, Bay Village Schools will start the school year on Monday, August 24 (instead of Tuesday, August 18).
Based on 200+ parent questions to our FAQ form, this extra week will allow us to provide virtual opportunities for open houses, walk throughs, meetings, etc. so that parents and students gain a better understanding of what school will look like under these new conditions.
Beginning the week of August 17, families can access a variety of interactive experiences, based upon student age groups and buildings, that will help families visualize a typical school day and answer the wide range of detailed questions they may have. This Parent Academy will allow families to learn side-by-side with teachers and staff members. We will be:
- providing families with videos and age-appropriate materials to help with their COVID-19 safety plan preparation;
- holding virtual Family Open Houses at each of our schools on August 19 (time to be shared by your building principal);
- training on Google Classroom/Clever Classroom (the Rocket Help Desk Team is here for you all week!);
- making time for virtual class meetings and club meetings (High School students); and
- scheduling live streaming with teachers and students to make introductions and to connect with them on August 21.
The extra week will also give our teachers and staff the opportunity to reinforce and practice their knowledge of our new COVID-19 safety, cleaning, student management and other important protocols to keep everyone safe once students arrive. This protocol practice and training will be in addition to all the regular professional development required of staff every year. Watch for detailed information from your school building/s for the week of August 17.
The "Slow Start" plan will now start as follows:
Revised Slow Start Dates
• Blue Team--In-Building Students: Attend school in person Monday & Tuesday, August 24 & 25.
• White Team--In-Building Students: Attend school in person Wednesday & Thursday, August 26 & 27.
• All students will use eLearning when not in the school building during the instructional day.
Slow Start Hours
• Normandy--8:30-11:30 a.m. (shortened day)
• Westerly--8-11 a.m. (shortened day)
• Bay Middle--regular 5.5 hour day (7:35 a.m.-1:20 p.m.)
• Bay High--regular 5.5 hour day (7:50 a.m.-1:30 p.m.)
This year, more than ever, the partnership between the district and our families is so important. Sometimes we have to slow down to go fast! We know this extra week will help One Rocket Nation step off to a successful school year.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jodie Hausmann
Superintendent, Bay Village City School District
