“By knowing what we do not know, we can learn; if we were to make no errors, we would be less likely to learn (or even to need to learn) – and we probably are not involved in challenge if there is not an element of being wrong and not succeeding.” ― John A.C. Hattie, Visible Learning for Teachers: Maximizing Impact on Learning
As the Director of Teaching and Learning for the Bay Village City Schools, I work alongside our teachers, administrators and staff to provide all of our students with challenges that allow them to learn, and the supports and resources that are needed to continue to grow that learning.
The Bay Village Schools are committed to supporting all students, recognizing that learning occurs along a continuum and that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the learning of our students. The district has an Extended Learning Plan that details specific actions that will be taken over the next 18 months to support students, extend student learning and provide mental health and social emotional learning supports. The plan can be found HERE.
Char Shryock is in her 33th year as an educator and her 10th year as the Director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction for the Bay Village City Schools. She has lead the development of curriculum for all content areas k-12. Her responsibilities also include acting as district testing coordinator and overseeing the technology integration resources in the district.
Char is actively involved in a number of state and national professional organizations including OSBA, ASCD, SECO, Ohio Learning Forward, PTA, and the National Councils of Teachers of Math, English and Science. Equitable access to high quality instruction based on high standards drives her involvement in many state and national projects including working with ODE on standards and assessment revision, and the development of the current ODE Strategic Plan. Nationally, she has been a Collaborative for Student Success Fellow, the Ohio Lead for Student Achievement Partners Standards Advocates, and currently serves on the education advisory board for the non-profit CenterPoint Education. In 2015 she was awarded the Golden Oak Award for advocacy by the Ohio PTA. Char spent 22 years as a 7-12 ELA and science teacher, and technology integration specialist. She holds a B.S. in Biology and English from Baldwin-Wallace University, and an M.A. in Educational Administration from Ashland University. When she isn't working, Char acts as a field supervisor for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History's summer archaeological field school.
