COLD AND FLU SEASON
Dear Parents/Guardians --
The schools are working hard to keep your child well as we experience elevated levels of absences due to cold and flu symptoms. Be assured that, with guidance from our Cuyahoga County Department of Health, we are monitoring absences due to illness very closely.
Our maintenance department is adding staff so they can increase the level of cleaning and sanitizing throughout the building each evening. We are giving special attention to all surfaces where students learn or gather. In addition, school buses are being sanitized.
We are also reminding students to wash their hands frequently. With this in mind, there are ways that you can assist us in our efforts. Please share the following with your children:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand rub may be used.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people, such as hugging.
We also ask that if your child exhibits ANY of these symptoms (and they may be concurrent or sequential), you keep your child home.
Symptoms requiring child to stay home or removal of child from school:
- At least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (less than 100 degrees) or signs of a fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance, or sweating) without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
- 24 hours after vomiting and diarrhea. Note: please do not bring your child to school if they have vomited in the night.
- Excessive runny nose and congestion, and coughing that won't stop.
- Sore throat with swollen glands, loss of voice.
- Frequent scratching of body or scalp, lice, rash, or any other spots that resemble childhood diseases, including ringworm.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
CDC BROCHURE: THE FLU AND YOU *
*Note that the CDC states that people infected with flu shed virus and may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to about 5-7 days after getting sick. (However, if symptoms persist, such as runny nose, congestion, cough, or other symptoms noted above, please have child remain home until symptom free.) If your child has the flu, please follow your doctor's advice.
Vaccination requirements for enrolled students:
Seventh-graders: The Ohio Department of Health requires the Tdap booster for all students entering seventh grade that started with the 2010-2011 school year. Any student who received a Tdap within 5 years of entering 7th grade will not need to be re-immunized for entry to 7th grade.
The Ohio Department of Health also requires Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) for all students entering seventh grade starting with the 2016-2017 school year. Your student will need one dose of MCV4 prior to entry into 7th grade. See letter to parents/guardians of 7th-graders.
Twelfth-graders: The Ohio Department of Health requires two doses of Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) for all students entering twelfth grade starting with the 2016-2017 school year. Meningococcal vaccine is recommended for all preteens and teens. Your student will need at least one dose of MCV4 prior to entry into 12th grade. See letter to parents/guardians of 12th-graders.
Here is a complete list of required vaccinations for all grade levels.
